Guild member detained by ICE in Minnesota January 16, 2026 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Dylan Manshack, Comms | dmanshack@cwa-union.org | 202-445-4033 Member remains in ICE custody in Texas MINNEAPOLIS — On Friday, January 9, ICE arrested a member of our union, the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild, TNG-CWA Local 37002, as part of Operation Metro Surge. While the circumstances of his arrest are not clear, we know he has been transferred to an ICE detention facility in El Paso, Texas, where he is awaiting action on his petition for habeas corpus. The Guild is not publicly identifying the member out of concern for his family’s safety, but he is a father, a husband, and a staff member at a Minneapolis non-profit organization. He is a steward in our union and an advocate for all workers. And he is one of dozens of Minnesota union members who have been detained in recent weeks. The Department of Homeland Security says it has made more than 2,000 arrests since the surge began in December, according to an MPR News report. But the agency has not provided details about the people arrested, such as how many were charged with a crime, how many face deportation, and how many were subsequently released. “The Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild stands with our member and his family as they face an uncertainty that is all too common in our state right now,” local president Nick Woltman said. “Like all Minnesota workers, our members deserve to feel safe in their communities both on and off the job.” “The detention of a Guild member in Minnesota amidst the chaos created by DHS is heartbreaking and infuriating,” said NewsGuild-CWA President Jon Schleuss. “My heart goes out to his family, who are now without their father and husband. We’ll be sharing the details soon, but here are just a handful of the major victories we’re celebrating: salary increases, higher salary minimums, more weeks of parental leave, increased severance pay, and more!

The Slate Union is extremely happy to announce that we have a tentative agreement on a contract! This was a hard-fought effort, and the result is a stronger, better-compensated union.

We want to keep Slate human!

We’ve come to some compromises, but there is still work to do. Slate still has not promised adequate protections against AI-related layoffs, they won’t agree on a definition of generative AI, and they want to be free to use our work to train AI without telling us.

Our union only has seven days until our contract expires and we’re still fighting hard to secure our unit’s most important priorities. We’re determined to get those AI protections and higher salaries!

There’s still lots of work to be done, but we’re happy our union members made their priorities heard and that management listened to our concerns! 💪

Yesterday, Slate management agreed to make video editors/producers a union position! We’re happy they met us in good faith and heard our members’ testimonies on why these roles will be crucial members of our editorial staff.

1/ At bargaining yesterday, @propublica.org management said that they should have 100% discretion to replace workers with AI and would not commit to labeling future AI-generated content.

Management also significantly cut down our request for annual cost of living increases and higher salary minimums to better match industry standards. And they continue to refuse to include the role of video editors in the unit.

Once again, Slate’s management rejected our common sense protections against AI. Our journalists are leaders in reporting and analysis on the catastrophic impacts of generative AI—so why can’t management guarantee they won’t use that very technology to undermine our jobs and work?

Today Slate’s union members joined the bargaining team in solidarity at the table across from Slate’s management to hear their response to our economic and AI proposals.

We're back at the bargaining table today. We’ve made some progress so far, but have plenty of work left to do. Just six weeks left until our contract expires. All we want this holiday season is a fair contract!

We received our first counterproposals from management today with disappointing language — including no guaranteed wage increases this year and rollbacks of hard-fought language on diversity and severance. We stand united and ready to fight for the contract we deserve.

We just wrapped another big day of bargaining. We're making progress but there will be plenty of work to get done after the holiday, especially regarding our new workplace protections surrounding AI. Grateful as always for this union—and eager to finish bargaining with a strong contract! 💪🦃

More important to me than my identity, I am also the Vice President of the NewsGuild of New York, and targeting me with a blatantly retaliatory termination like this feels like an egregious shot against our union and against media workers as a whole.
