I stand by what I said. In the final paragraphs he admits railroads need more regulation, but states seldom are successful. He is clearly faulting homeowners for not clearing land. Yet, the scenic area regulations he had a hand in creating require structures to be hidden by trees.

A fall webworm moth rests on a wooden plank. The moth's wingspan is about 2 inches. The wings are white with small black spots, sparsely arranged. The body is covered with white fur. The moth has fernlike antennae.

which is why you don't see much after the caterpillars munch the tree leaves & pupate. They seldom affect tree health, so there's no need to spray them. If a tree is suffering, cut off the nests & give the tree water if conditions are dry.

A rare find: Gray's broomrape (Aphyllon californicum ssp. grayanum) grows in sandy vernal pool areas of the east Gorge, blooming late July to early August. It requires a host plant, here the aster Symphyotrichum spathulatum or the grass Beckmannia syzigachne.
