Oh my goodness of course we should have! We were very wrapped up in our family runaway time. πŸ™Š but we are still here today if you’re around!

A toddler stands silhouetted against a floor-to-ceiling balcony door. He is holding and drinking from a sippy cup. Outside the door, beyond the balcony and its railings, is the hazy blue-grey intersection of sky and sea.

We are in Brighton for a little weekend getaway. It has been so valuable to not need to think about work/life logistics and instead to just hang out in this beautiful seaside super queer town, seeing everything through the wide eyes of our 19 month old little ginger man. Needed this escape.

The stubborn American in me got angry at what I perceived as British nonchalance. But after a few days, and after treating my symptoms at home, I realized how conditioned I’ve become to the American healthcare system. And how financially beneficial it is for Americans to see doctors so often. >>

I’m just getting over a nasty upper respiratory infection, and I got very grumpy with my wife when she told me that no matter how sick I feel, my GP probably wouldn’t take me very seriously if I’d only been sick for 3 or 4 days. They would just send me home and tell me to rest and hydrate. >>

We finally set up baby J’s nursery, and A is in there with him now doing bedtime. J is absolutely ready. We’re… kind of ready? πŸ˜‚ it’s the end of an era and I’m having ✨feelings✨ about it all.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Start your Thanksgiving dinners with a land acknowledgment. And don’t let the tryptophan lull you into complacency. ❀️

I don’t have anything particularly groundbreaking to say. I think I just wanted to reflect into the echo chamber about how it is that we got here again. I can’t really call this country home anymore, because I don’t really recognize it anymore. And that saddens and scares me.

America has spoken loud and clear, and I’ve heard the message, and it scares me. This isn’t just about the policies that will impact us if we ever decide to live here again. It’s also about the conditions that led to that man ending up back in the White House. The vacuum into which he stepped.

It feels different, though, being here in the wake of the recent election. I am no longer comforted by the fact that Nashville is liberal. That doesn’t make it feel safer for me and my family. There is a discomfort bordering on fear lingering in the back of my mind. I am hyper-vigilant.

The thing about Nashville, aside from its country music lore and Honkytonk tourism, is that it’s a liberal city in a conservative state, and there is a surprising number of East Coast transplants who have recently decided to move here. In Nashville, you forget, sometimes, that you are in Tennessee.

When they announced they were going to move, I was upset and skeptical. New York to Nashville seemed like the biggest culture shock, especially for my grandmother, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t also have lingering fears about my family relocating to a red state.

When I moved to London, there was no logical place my parents could relocate so that they could be equally close to both of their daughters. So they moved to Nashville, and they brought my grandmother with them. At the time she was 88, and she had never lived anywhere but New York in all her life.

For context, my sister is a lawyer who specializes in combating human trafficking. She does extraordinary work, and unfortunately, there is a lot of work to be done on this issue here in Nashville. It made sense for her and for her military husband to settle here. They love their lives here.

I grew up in a very Broadway-involved family and memorized every word and note of the Wicked musical instead of doing months’ worth of homework in middle school and I am SO. FLIPPING. EXCITED to see the Wicked film.

Thinking about this time last year: Christmas Eve and wishing so badly that I could have Camembert on crusty bread and a cold glass of Bailey’s. I had both today while my baby boy giggled and wiggled nearby in his elf onesie. I’ve never been more baffled by the passing of time than I am as a mother.
