The year is 2025 and I still know far more than I ever wanted to about Bitcoin.

Really never found anyone who was happy with the return on investment for their cybersecurity bachelor’s, though I’m sure there are some out there.

Now 10 years later I spend my time mentoring the youth by steering them away from “cybersecurity” degrees that are usually less technical and more program management. Do that as a minor, or join a CTF club... Or just go work at a help desk.

10 years ago today, I graduated with my B.S in computer science. 😳

Bluesky is mostly good, but its lack of private profiles definitely limits how much I’m willing to use it. 🙂‍↕️

Husband is grilling lunch under the pavilion he recently finished while it gently rains. It’s a pretty good life.

I have bought nothing from Amazon for the past month. But there are challenges. Like, “where can I get a food safe tentacle mold” and “why is this niche e-book not available anywhere but Kindle” 😂

So, you know, very surmountable first world problems over here.

Has anyone used Duolingo and felt it helped them get close to conversational? Or do you have another recommendation that is relatively cheap?

Even if unemployed, having less debt probably makes that easier! Congratulations!!

My quest to give myself some semblance of control over my environment continues. Mulch came from a local farm here in town.

Did you know that you can probably get same day delivery for mulch even if you and your husband are extremely unprepared to do anything with it?? You can!! Chaotic gardening is necessary when you suddenly have a whole week of good weather. At least that’s what I’m telling him. 😇

Today I’m talking to a lot of people about cyber security, as is my job, but I really want to talk to everyone about mulch and gardening instead.

In other news, someone stopped Brandon in a grocery store today and told him he is a “dead ringer for the Ukrainian president.” We agreed this was a big compliment.

Hopefully we can take what we learn with us. Instead of Whole Foods, sign up for a CSA this summer, and visit a farmers market! Local butchers, fish stands, whatever you can find. Maybe we’ll have new favorites.

Amazon likely won’t care about this at all. But the local businesses we support instead will! I’m treating it as a mindfulness practice: what could I easily be buying elsewhere? How much do I rely on (unnecessary) convenience like same-day delivery? What local businesses sell things I need?

Legal counsel representing federal employees is now being targeted by the Trump administration. Law firms are receiving a clear message that retaliation is possible for those advocating on behalf of individuals or groups opposing the administration’s agenda.

We work with a 3rd party that insists 3 hour meetings are the best and most productive way to do things, and coincidentally they also don’t know how to read or answer questions.

I am just not meant to be in 4 straight hours of meetings.

Nothing has brought me joy recently quite like the little onion sprouts that started popping up from my seed trays.

When I was young, my dad told me:

The cavalry isn’t coming. It’s time to find your own horse.

I think about that a lot.

I had some meat and bread both on their way out, but we also had some homemade sauerkraut that my husband got after putting in a day of labor for some friends, and some great mustard we got as part of a Christmas gift.

Truly, we are living our Irish ancestors’ greatest dreams. 😂

I have never been good at caring for indoor plants, and they barely spoke English, so there were no instructions. Thankfully, it’s a very old, well established plant, so it was very willing to come back with a little love. Flower for reference.

That plant was a gift from our elderly neighbors who moved away. Brandon helped them in a time of need, and they came by to give us the ultra rare flower it produces once a year. It blooms overnight and dies by morning. We were so grateful that they gave us the whole plant when they left.

I also seem to have succeeded at bringing our Queen of the Night cactus back from dying. I doubt it will flower this year, but it taught me a lot, so I’m still calling it a win.

While we wait for our planned seeds to arrive, we’ve gone ahead and potted some old seeds from Brandon’s brother. I’m not fully expecting them to germinate, but with a heat mat and some lights, they might have a chance!
