bruh all that money they're wasting on ai could be used on it's contractors and employees and ACTUALLY get so much more done AND better output. but no, why would they invest in their future?

I love love love my job but it certainly comes with its stresses. These pubs could get a lot more awesome, creative letterers and translators that would still bend over backwards to work with them if they simply paid enough for it to be worth the struggle. They absolutely can afford it!!

And even being 4 years almost into lettering, it is STILL intimidating to ask for more when I know it's reasonable, bc at the end of the day we're still just contract workers with no real protection.

And they also only offered $5/pg... I was fresh into lettering trying to pay bills, get into a career (with a part time job on top of it) nor did I feel like I had any real reputation to be able to ask for more... This is less-so an individual issue imo and obviously more an industry problem.

100%. It is also extremely intimidating as a freelancer trying to get by to ask for raises. My experience starting out was $4/pg, asking for more was met with "do more work to make it worth paying you more" AFTER I was told I was one of this pub's best and fastest improved letterers in my first year

hopefully we get a statement soon like this one but that remains to be seen

I really do hope that they mean what they say in this statement--that Seven Seas will not use AI for translation. It's good to know they're at least aware of our feelings towards it...

Anyway, for people who don't know the industry, every editor and project manager I've worked with on a translation, both in and out of Seven Seas, has had a clear passion for producing quality work that would make fans happy. I can't imagine a single one of them daring to suggest I stoop to MTL.

Do you care about things? The AI companies want to stop that. Their product, more than any other invention in human history, is training you to stare dead-eyed while a machine serves you a stream of mediocrity

its so silly to me that any company would try to use ai for manga as it has alrradt massively failed and backfired time and time again. anybody could ask an ai right now to "translate" a book for free. why would they want to pay $12 for that??

it's extremely hard to trust they won't try to implement ai nonsense......
