Tracy Chapman’s first big break didn’t come from a record label. It came from @nataliemerchant.bsky.social who cried while listening to an advance tape of her debut album.

Natalie believed in Tracy’s music and made sure that others heard it, too. She even opened for Tracy at her own show.

“Give Me One Reason” was Tracy Chapman’s biggest hit in both the US and Australia, peaking at #3 in both countries. The song from her fourth studio album “New Beginning” also went all the way to #1 in Canada, and reached #16 in New Zealand. Chapman earned the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song for the track, and it was also nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards of 1997.

On this day in 1996, the Tracy Chapman single “Give Me One Reason” peaked at #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (July 20)
