“A moth to the flame,” says Wei Wuxian, mouth pinched.

migraine kicking my ass as of late. trying to finish Dying to Raise the Dead so I can post back chapters knowing I won't have to make changes. Almost there, so chapters should start coming out pretty quick if I can get over this final hurdle.

Lan Wangji wants him so badly. This man who can cure illnesses and catch fish, who can raise a child and ride a horse. Who can play a flute so sweetly, can paint a likeness, can laugh so easily. Who can look like this at Lan Wangji, lips parted, eyes dark.

The line whips and shivers, and Lan Wangji realises that at the end of the cord the decoyed hook is intended to look like an insect landing on the water’s surface. Wei Wuxian manipulates it seemingly effortlessly, whipping it back and forth with long, smooth movements.

“You called me a true friend,” says Lan Wangji, jaw stiff, the joint grinding against his ear. “Wei Ying. I have none truer. There is no one else I would do this for. Is that not enough?”

He knows without waiting what the answer will be, though.

the only people in MDZS who drive sensible sedans are Jiang Yanli and a-Yuan. Fight me.

So, while Wei Wuxian stares, shocked, he lifts a cup of wine to his lips and tosses it back. It burns on his tongue, in his throat. Licks and scrapes at him. He plunks the cup down on the wooden table, looking into the clear, shimmering liquid lining the bottom.

Like this, he looks like the Yiling Laozu of legend, of nightmare. His purse lined with coins and curses, stitched together with screams.

And then he smiles at Lan Wangji, and he is just himself again.

Lan Wangji wants to call out to him, now. To tell him he doesn’t have to do this, doesn’t have to be this. This evil, this darkness.

But he does. Because Lan Wangji, Hanguang-jun, Second Jade of Gusu, couldn’t find a single other way to bring him and his people home in one piece.
