Why do progressives and justice advocates seem to not care about COVID? It’s still important to warn people about the dangers of COVID and make schools and workplaces safe, Andrew Wilkin says.

Been asking myself that for years. See also genocide.

a picture of a child asleep in bed with a stuffed monkey. Text says "Long COVID can last weeks, months, or years after COVID-19 infection and affect people of all ages, even if they had no previous health conditions. Effects of Long COVID include:

Permanent damage to the brain, lungs, heart, and other organs
Heart palpitations
Difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Memory loss
Dizziness
Chest pain
Difficulty thinking ("brain fog")
Persistent cough
And much more

Long COVID can cause long-term disability, even if you were young and healthy.. Long COVID can affect anyone. The only way to be sure to avoid Long COVID is to avoid COVID-19. Wear the highest quality mask available to you, stay up to date on vaccines, and maintain clean, ventilated air indoors.

Today is Long COVID Awareness Day. Long COVID can affect people of all ages & cause permanent organ damage, leave you unable to work or do the things you love, & more. Protect yourself from Long COVID by avoiding COVID-19. Learn more about disability from Long COVID: www.hhs.gov/civil-rights...

fuck me for being this person, i guess, but public universities are a civic good and shouldn’t be run like businesses. and if you’re going to insist on running them like so, at least do some market research. students like their professors; they don’t want MOOCs taught by ChatGPT.

Adam Baldwin was literally *the* guy who named GamerGate and made it go viral. It was just some loser 4chan/incel YouTuber shit before then. They spammed him to get his attention because they knew he’s also a psycho loser and they wanted to make it go viral, and he did it. And it worked.

Why I may ‘hire’ AI instead of a graduate student “It can competently perform a lot of the work I need immediately,” this professor writes

“In our culture, preferring an algorithm to a trainee feels like a betrayal of the academic mission.”

That’s because it is.

Reddit post on Climber Girls sub:

—-
I've never posted here but I'm a lady climber and climbing is/was my life.

Endless trips, endless training. My friends. Impacted the jobs I took... My whole world. My whole world.

I was chipping away, trying to get to V12. Going through a rough life patch because I had to move away from a city I liked for a job. But climbing my hardest yet.

I got COVID for a third time in 2025 (I'm vaxed and boosted and took paxlovid)..... Boom long COVID. Can't climb due to PEM. I haven't climbed in almost a year. I even learned I was having some remnants of long COVID from prior infections (things like hives, or some sleep stuff, and deficiencies which I learned COVID can cause).

But this last one really did it. I'm not as severe as other people but I'll crash for a week if I go to the gym.

It is.... Really sad. I'm not used to it and don't know when I'll be used to it. I don't know if it goes away.

On #LongCovidAwarenessDay — I think the most important thing to understand is that it’s still happening:

“I got COVID for a 3rd time in 2025 (I'm vaxed, boosted & took paxlovid)... Boom #LongCovid. Can't climb due to PEM. I haven't climbed in almost a year.”

“COVID… is still causing disability.“

This incorporative logic is now visible as a pattern. New York University dissolved its Africana Studies program into a Department of Social and Cultural Analysis in 2005. The University of Iowa created a School of Social and Cultural Analysis in 2025–26, absorbing African American Studies, American Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Latina/o/x Studies, Jewish Studies, and Native American and Indigenous Studies under a single umbrella. UT-Austin’s consolidation of Black studies, women’s studies, and Latina/o studies into a Department of Cultural Analysis Studies conforms to the pattern. The recurrence of the same phrase across institutions separated by two decades is not coincidental. Social and Cultural Analysis is what the university reaches for when the political conditions require withdrawal: a container bland enough to absorb multiple scholarly traditions without scandal, whose name announces in advance that no particular intellectual tradition is in charge.

This piece is excellent, as was the webinar. A minor correction: a School of SCA was proposed to UI's board of regents in 2025. they rejected the proposal. This spring, UI eliminated African American Studies/ Gender and Women's Studies' majors and dept/program status. so we have less than an SCA.

Mining made this US tribal area a toxic wasteland. This Indigenous nation brought it back to life The Quapaw Nation is the only US Native community to carry out a cleanup of one of the country’s worst sites of environmental contamination

“We learned as we went, and obviously the EPA did, too,” Roper said. “We don’t want to ever leave a site where it’s just a wasteland. If you take all the trees off, all the topsoil off and nothing can grow, that’s not benefiting anyone.”

The personal brand thing makes a lot of sense (unfortunately). I was wondering if this was a big part of it (even for folks I wouldn’t normally associate with needing a personal brand)

‘I wish I could push ChatGPT off a cliff’: professors scramble to save critical thinking in an age of AI As AI has upended the way students learn, academics worry about the future of the humanities - and society at large

I'm one of many professors quoted in this report from Alice Speri. I really appreciate The Guardian taking an angle which has basically eluded every other major outlet.

Please note most federal grants *required* information on how the grants would benefit underserved or understudied groups. If you applied for a grant, you *had to* include something that would speak to diversity and equity.

FT and I have met IRL and have been aquatinted for many years. What I cherish about our friendship is how I'm always moved to be more engaging and critical in my thinking, but also to have fun and find joy. Please join me in supporting my friend.

Lawyer (after asking the same question 12 times): “Respectfully I’m not asking you about Microsoft Excel’s capabilities.”

This bro was using every delay and trick he could to not say “we shoved all the grants into a shitty LLM from the makers of ChatGPT and let that make the decisions”

Guess why?
