A produtividade trazida pelos geradores de lero-lero é a de gente que não sabe escrever discorrendo sobre assuntos que não quer entender pra caçar o clique de gente que não gosta de ler porque isso demanda pensar.

Onde isso aumenta demais a produtividade é quando a ideia é só espalhar mentiras.

hearing AI company CEOs excitedly telling you how "we can now all finally become managers" without blinking makes me want to pack my bags and move to the moon

Americans vastly overestimate the strength of US civil society. Around the time Bolsonaro and Trump were elected I remember some Very Smart People saying that Brazilian society was doomed bc it's such a young democracy, whereas the established democracy of the US would withstand a fashy leader.

Not to mention that, while most people get their news from social media, the people who create that content get their news from actual news outlets, often without credit. So a concerted project to hollow out these institutions also hollows out a lot of these independent creators.

Who can afford to send a journalist to congress every day? To state legislature? To City Council? None of the independent journos I know in Canada are feeding themselves off of this. But bigger outlets can afford that. So if ownership is explicitly right-wing, how does that filter down?

underground art is important (and important to ME personally) but a world where nobody ever gets a big budget to take a big weird swing is still massively depressing

GenAI exists at the intersection of anthropomorphizing technology & dehumanizing other people. It's a lot easier to ascribe meaning & intentionality to the machine if you don't believe that other people are people. There's no difference between AI & human writing if EVERYTHING is devoid of soul.

Once, technology solved problems. People liked having problems solved, so they liked technology.

Tech execs started to think of that sentiment as their due. So when they stopped solving problems, and people stopped liking them, they became outraged. "How dare you not love whatever we give you?"

I am a luddite and to me there is a lot of joy in technology. In technology that we deploy for all our wellbeing. Solar panels and vaccines, high-speed rail and wikipedia.

But they joy stems from the feeling of being able to be part of humanity in an embedded, meaningful way. Not from buying shit.
