I went to my daughters school musical last night and after she said “the man who cackles real loud at every single joke was there tonight. He’s been coming to every show for years. We all call him cackle man.” And I’m pretty sure they’re talking about me.

Besides the show being wildly funny, clever, and incredibly well put together, it also appears that the people making Strip Law are also absolutely COOL AS HELL.

I watched Malcolm X last night with my kids and I still can’t believe it wasn’t even nominated for best picture. Spike Lee really did have a rough go in Hollywood. His prime was so much better than any of the darling auteurs that followed.

Years later I got to meet him again when I was at the 2008 DNC. I was there with my now wife who was a union leader in Denver and there as an honored guest, and I got to tell him both of these stories. He was tickled about Mrs Lacey and was glad to hear we kept the fight going at UT. That felt good.

I met him in college when he came to campus to speak at a protest I helped organize. We were protesting against attacks on affirmative action polices, and his rally was a major event on a campus that hadn’t seen a lot of protest in the previous years, and it sparked a ton of enthusiasm.

The first vote I ever cast was for Jesse Jackson. It was in my second grade class mock election, and Jesse won in a rout. He was aided by the fact that our teacher, Mrs Lacey, wore a Jackson pin nearly every day. I was very confused and upset when he didn’t become president that year.
