Under Mamdani, City to Probe Businesses Where Most Workers Take Zero Sick Days Employers will be subject to an investigation by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection if more than half their employees took zero paid time off in a given year.

New York City will now investigate businesses where more than 50% of workers take zero sick days.

Under Zohran Mamdani the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection will flag such businesses.

As of 2014, most workers in New York are legally entitled to time off.

And the guy was like "uhhhhh but we need a strong Democratic majority to make that happen" and I was like "yeah, we need strong Democrats. I'm seeing people around me every day who are meeting this moment, and I'm ready to vote for any one of them to primary the Congresswoman."

I would be more impressed if the guy who said that she'd joined amicus briefs told me that she was using her mandatory congressional oversight to go in, talk to people being held, and bring out info to get habeas petitions filed on their behalf, since so many cannot access lawyers.

This fundraiser helps families who have been (and still are) impacted by the ICE antics in Minnesota, who haven't been able to go to work or leave their homes for fear of being snatched off the streets. This parents group are their neighbors who have banded together to help.

Life comes first (part 2): You will finish. You will succeed. In 2006, I was certain that my academic career was over. My husband was hospitalized with a brain tumor in November 2005 on and off until he died in 2006. In April of 2006, Joe visited us in the hospital. He wept with me in the waiting room. He told me something that I have carried with me ever since. He said, “What you are doing right now for your husband and your baby is quite possibly the most important thing you will ever do in your entire life.” He told me that he had no doubt I would finish the dissertation, once the time was right. He said he had no doubt that I would succeed as a scholar and a teacher, because they were such defining aspects of who I am. In that moment, Joe gave me two things: Permission to check out temporarily and care for my family. Confidence in my future as a scholar – that it would wait for me until the time was right and that I would succeed. So, these are the two things that I offer my advisees: Permission to check out to care for life needs; My unabashed confidence in their ability to succeed when the time is right. Sometimes people just need to know that you believe in them.

The third nugget is the reason that I am here now. It's why I got a job. Got tenure. Wrote books. In 2006, I really didn't think any of this would ever happen. At all. Joe convinced me otherwise. And this is what I hope to impart on my brilliant students.
