Wondering where the sunshine has gone?

Spare a thought for northeast Scotland; Aberdeen Dyce hasn't recorded any sunshine since 21 January! This is provisionally the longest sunless period here since records began in 1957 ☁️

The daily frequency (persistence) of SE'ly weather types in the objective Lamb Weather Types dataset (since 1871) was the joint 2nd highest on record for the month of January...

Reading has seen 24 consecutive days of rainfall, the longest unbroken spell of consecutive rainfall days at Reading since daily rainfall records began in 1908, beating the 23 days set in December 1934 and in January 1970.
It has been very wet.

The Scottish mountains have been poking above the subsidence inversion, where Cairngorm recorded a dewpoint of -41°C yesterday afternoon, with a corresponding relative humidity of 2%! 🏔️

In the HadUKP series for the "NW England and north Wales" region, Saturday 20th September 2025 was the 7th wettest day in the whole dataset back to 1931.

For a two-day event, Friday 19th/Saturday 20th falls to 12th place, but is the wettest two-day period since Christmas Day/Boxing Day 2015.

Across a swathe of Wales and N'ern England, Sat 20th Sept was the wettest climatological day (09Z - 09Z) since at least New Year's Eve 2024.

Loftus (N Yorks) recorded its wettest day, for any month, since Aug 2002; Trawsgoed (Ceredigion) wettest day since Oct 2018.

Very energetic thunderstorms in eastern Scotland this afternoon, producing hail ≥3 cm in diameter and torrential rain — some unofficial gauges recorded as much as 50 mm in 15-25 minutes. The temperature at Aboyne fell by 11°C over a 24 minute period ⛈️

looks to be the case Trev. Funny you mention the hurricane season, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Dexter may get pulled towards the UK by the weekend (but quite uncertain).

The frontal analysis follows the Shapiro-Keyser cyclone model, with a frontal fracture (cold front detached from the warm front). S-K cyclones are typically among the most intense & rare in summer.

thanks Richard - unfortunately I was still in the U.S. when that event occurred, but I haven't come across any significant reports other than a few instances of flooding and lightning strikes. I was told that there was rotation evident in velocity data though

Genuinely lost count how many tornadoes were produced by this supercell thunderstorm that trundled ESE'wards from near Dora NM to Lubbock TX on Thursday afternoon/evening 🌪️

I cobbled this graphic together back in 2022, so it hasn't been updated with recent years and may not necessarily reflect UK-wide trends... but it is interesting to see spring rainfall trending more "extreme" in East Anglia — either wet or dry, but more often on the dry side

many counties were in the top 5 for TMax, but as you mention the cold nights certainly brought the average down, especially across southern UK

March 2025 was noteworthy for abundant sunshine and lack of rain — provisionally, it was the sunniest March on record in England, sunnier than July or August last year or the year before! ☀️

Wales (provisionally) had its driest March since 1944 & lowest number of March rain days (1 mm) since 1929. 🏜️
