In the middle of the night, a deer came into our yard and made himself a dinner of hydrangea flowers, bougainvillea petals and brand new agapanthus blossoms. The deer even attempted to eat one of the little metal sidewalk lights by the front gate.
For dessert, the deer jumped the back fence in order to have his way with a struggling rose bush and a potted smoke tree that I have only just recently planted on the deck at the side of the house

For almost the past two weeks, Todd and I have both had some version of the crud.
Mine has mutated from a bronchitis-ish/lung infection situation that I thought I had cured with a Z pack to a super duper disgusting head cold/flu combo that is plaguing me as I am writing this.
Our big concern through the whole ordeal is that we won’t be well enough to attend the annual hot dog eating contest at Lucy’s On Lighthouse tomorrow afternoon, an event we have been looking forward to for months.

Tim’s mom died Saturday.
Tim died about a year after my mother died, and it’s not lost on me that I did not meet Mrs. Sanchez until after Tim died.
Over the past eight years, Mrs. Sanchez and I had become very close. She called me “mijo,” and I not infrequently found myself phoning her in situations where I used to phone my own mother.
When I needed my mom.
Tim would sometimes call me from Santa Barbara while he was watering his begonias, trying to make me jealous with sexy California talk of beautiful sunshine and warm breezes.
When we moved out west, I planted a Red Viking begonia in a bright red ceramic pot and put it outside the guest room glass sliding doors.
Sunday, I planted a Pink Dragon Wing begonia in a pale green ceramic pot that I placed just inside the front garden gate, about six feet from the red begonia.
I don’t want the ghosts to forget about me.
I made the drive down to Mrs. Sanchez’s 90th birthday last November, and she was dressed up fabulously and glamorously in glittery gold and wearing a crown.
That’s how I still see her.

I’ve been buying a lot of vintage vinyl lately—teenage obsessions I couldn’t fully explore way back when with my limited funds.
It’s pretty much the only non-food shopping I do nowadays in our new life, and it’s a wildly fulfilling pastime.
I bought the first three Rough Trade albums on EBay last week because I currently have a burning passion for the band—and the genius singer Carol Pope—since recently scoring an original “promo only” Cruising soundtrack at Recycled Records in Monterey.
It’s crazy that you can’t find the song “Shake Down” anywhere else, even though it is so fucking major. Rough Trade is so fucking major. Carol Pope is so fucking major.
Every night, I lie in bed ravenously watching old Rough Trade tv performances and concerts and interviews on YouTube and voraciously Google deep diving any and all band histories while compulsively checking my Instagram to see if Carol Pope has finally decided to be my friend. It’s like I’m a geeked out 17-year-old all over again.
It’s like a high school confidential.

Since starting this diary entry last night, I ordered via Discogs a deluxe multi-disc Waxwork reissue of the Cruising soundtrack—a release I was unaware of until this morning—that includes three additional Rough Trade songs recorded for the film that never made the final cut. I also returned to EBay today to add the fourth Rough Trade album to my collection. Five minutes ago, I purchased a bitchin’ Rough Trade t-shirt from Carol Pope’s online store.
I probably am going to go back in for the coffee mug.

A companion piece to my last diary entry.
In the mid nineties before I had ever had any kind of homosexual physical interaction, I would sometimes accompany a friend of mine when he attended the (weekly?) sex parties held at the after hours offices of the Gay Cable Network.
Lou Maletta and Slave Dale never made us check our clothes when we showed up, which would have been a dealbreaker for me. My friend would quickly split off to go do stuff in the dark backroom with the sling while I’d sit on a couch in the red-lit front room, nervously spooking gay men happily sucking and fucking.
I am assuming this is pathetic reading. I certainly felt pathetic writing all this. Fear and guilt and shame were a major part of my life for a very long time.
Here is a revisionist GCN fantasy drawing to switch up the mood. For Pride.
I was imagining a special Spunk Party event at the newly opened Monster Bar West paying tribute to the legendary Gay Cable Network. I was envisioning Lou Maletta and Slave Dale method gogo dancers and newly restored director cuts of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salò and Peter Berlin’s Nights In Black Leather on the tv monitors. A signature cocktail called the 970-BEEF(Jack with a splash of bone broth). Maybe there’d be a poppers vending machine.
I’d have my gorgeous friend Rorke stay on an extra week to man the door and make sure VIP area seats were sympathetically saved for confused closet cases.

I turned the big 60 this year, and since I did not have a homosexual experience of any kind until I was in my early thirties… the math on this comes out to the sad fact that for more than half of my life, gay life equalled fantasy life. A hard number to get one’s head around.

So now that I am a fully actualized and long practicing queer, it may or may not come as a surprise to the modern world that I still devote more than a little mental space to fairy land. I get a little seasonal anxiety when summer rolls around. As the child of an army officer, many summers were spent moving.
At some point after settling into every new house, I was gently encouraged by my parents to go outside and “make some friends.” This was always difficult, and often traumatic for a kid like me, if you know what I mean. There were some tours where I never even made one friend.
When I turned 14 and we had moved to a base in Central America, I stopped trying and just stayed inside. I remember looking out the window at the neighborhood gang gleefully playing basketball on a court right behind our house and thinking, “Fuck this.”
When Todd and I relocated to the central coast of California at the end of last summer, we were very fortunate to be immediately taken in by the hottest and coolest girl on the peninsula. All of a sudden, we miraculously had a groovy crowd of wonderful locals, happiness-inducing places to go, and a remarkable and unfamiliar sense of belonging.

Friday night, we went out to see the band Arcane play at The Monarch Pub in Pacific Grove.
Arcane is the acoustic power duo side project of local rock stars Logan Mason and Yvan Vucina, and Friday night’s gig was Arcane’s debut live performance.
They were great, and not just because Logan and Yvan are two of the most beautiful guys in all the land.
It seems like we go out here far more than we did back in New York.

The douche onstage at Open Mic Night was scanning the audience repeating, “Any couples here?”
He found a few willing targets in the back rows for his laughless mouth farts before zeroing in on Todd and me up front.
“How about you two? Are you a couple?”
We didn’t respond.
“Seriously, are you a couple? Oh wait, you’re a guy. Sorry.”
He meant me. And he was sorry because two men can’t be a couple.
When we told him that two men most certainly can be a couple, Mr. Mouth Fart ignored the unfunny and uncomfortable silence overtaking the audience to circle back to me.
“I totally thought you were a chick.”
He said it over and over, chuckling every time as if he assumed the crowd was going to join in.
When we got up from our seats and walked up the aisle to end the night early and head home, Mr. Mouth Fart zinged on.
“I guess I made them leave… Sorry… Heheheh… I guess I made them leave…Sorry… Heheheh...” Again, as if he truly believed the other theater-goers would be grateful watching the two joke butt queers abandon their evening.
“Read this, bitch,” Todd sneered as he served Mr. Mouth Fart two middle fingers before exiting the venue through the main lobby. We didn’t hear any douche chuckles after that.
My life is way too short for badly buried, junior high intolerance. I will never be able to pretend that I cannot smell the unfortunately unforgettable stink of homophobia.
My memory is sadly too good for there to be any comedy in that for me.
I won’t be going back there.

For 30 years, I lived in a doorman elevator apartment building in New York City. Now we live in a house in a small town in California, which means we must go outdoors to empty our trash.
The garbage cans are on the other side of the garage where it’s pitch black in the evening shadows. There are lots of spooky after dark forest sounds coming from not too far down the hill past the backyard as well.
For those reasons, I never take out the trash after the sun goes down, but somehow Todd manages to only take the trash out late. He almost always returns from his mostly past midnight trash runs all freaked and out of breath, insisting there are space aliens lurking in the bushes surrounding the garbage cans.

I tore the list out of my notebook and put it under a large flamboyant paperweight in the center of my desk so I could not avoid seeing the list any time I happened to be sitting at my desk.
On the last day of March, I have not yet completed any of the tasks from that list.
To be honest, I didn’t even start a single one of them.

#DearDiary,
Brownie, the sweet little hermit thrush who lived in the garden beside our house, was discovered dead by Todd yesterday afternoon on the sidewalk by our front gate. His tiny body was still warm.
Every day we woke up to Brownie fluttering at the dining room window or hopping around the flower pots outside the sliding glass doors by the kitchen, but we hadn’t seen him for a few days. We had hoped that his schedule was just thrown off because of the rain.
I went poking around the un-dealt-with boxes leftover from our move still clogging up the garage. I found a hermit thrush sized, red velvet lined glass coffin—with a lid etched with birds on tree branches—in a clear plastic Home Depot storage bin because that’s the kind of person I am. We buried Brownie by the front gate.
Today, we are going to Grigg’s Nursery to pick out some sort of statuary to mark the spot. I’ll probably get a flower to plant as well.
We loved Brownie.

When I moved to New York and all doors seemed closed to me and I didn’t know what to do, I used to fantasize about getting a job with Al Goldstein and doing cartoons for Screw Magazine.
Often when I draw hot guys, the end results look an awful lot like Todd.
I don’t know if I’m making the drawings turn out that way or I’m choosing subject matter that reminds me of the real deal.
