I’ve known Marshall over thirty years, and in these last twenty in-between years, he taught me a lot. He was a beacon of caring human kindness, grace in friendship, and open-heartedness.

My heart goes out to all who knew him, particularly to Kathryn Bartee and their two sons.

This picture was taken during one of our many breakfasts together, and, thankfully, each time Clark returned for a visit to the Twin Cities, he would coordinate Paul Somers, Maria Cruikshank, and myself to meet with Marshall, most recently this past October.

We would see shows together, and, with big thanks to Bob Malos, he would see just about every show I was in.

This year, I was privileged to coordinate his casting in his final performance, a reading of Beck Lee’s new play, “Seltzer Nights.”

During the twenty years in between, I would frequently visit with Marshall.

Thanks to our good mutual friend, Clark Cruikshank, we would work together again in “The Odd Couple” at Jon Hasler Theater. A remarkable comedic actor, Marshall was hilarious as Felix Unger. That was twenty years ago…

For years, they talked about and marvelled at how Marshall kept his cover throughout the evening and how surprised they were when he stood up and incredibly became a part of the mystery. I’m indebted to Marshall for many things, but this lasting joyful memory that he gave to my folks is a big one.

His character sat as a member of the audience and (spoiler alert) popped up for the big reveal at the end of the show. My parents attended a performance of that show and sat at Marshall’s table.

Thanks to Lee H. Adams, I would later perform in two Mystery Café productions with him: first in “Hubba Hubba Homicide,” where he was my father, a bubble gum executive, and later in “Murder for Dummies.”

A couple of years later, I would see him in Mystery Café’s “‘Til Death Do Us Part,” hilariously cast as the groom whose toupee flips forward.

When I first moved to Minnesota, I was fortunate to see “The Diary of Anne Frank” at the Jungle Theater, featuring a stellar cast, including Marshall as a defining Mr. Van Daan, vulnerable, cruel, sympathetic.

My very good friend, Marshall Hambro, has passed away. He was among the kindest souls I’ve ever met.
