It does seem the threshold for what counts as a good reason to miss a scheduled exam is much lower than it used to be (not always a bad thing). I took a 3 h freshman quantum physics final pretty damn sick. I got a B in the class, which was where I was going in. I was also 19. Couldn't do that now

I usually offer to re-weight other exams & that tends to filter out the students who're genuinely concerned about their ability to perform. Of course, doing almost everything as take-home/timed online knocks it down to begin with.

we should adopt the penalties for missing a gate in downhill competitions to chem exams. Miss a single question & you get a zero on the exam. Imagine the amount of grading time we'd save by starting each exam with a challenging question.
