Decades in the making, the treaty enables countries to create Marine Protected Areas beyond national borders, require environmental impact assessments for activities at sea, and strengthen global ocean governance.

Today marks a historic turning point for the ocean. The High Seas Treaty is now in force, creating the first global framework to protect marine life in international waters, nearly half the planet’s ocean. This progress reflects decades of global collaboration and persistence.
