The Labour right has an undeserved reputation as being in touch with popular opinion. They never were - they are committed to hard right policies whether popular or not. When the party slumps at the next election they will tell themselves that they did the right thing and the voters were just wrong.

The bombing of Iran is an outrage and the UK government can’t even bring itself to condemn it, though it of course condemns Iranian counterattacks. Pathetic.

Today was Shabbat Zakhor. It features a reading about Amalek and a commandment not to forget his evil deeds. In the Purim story (set in Persia) Haman is seen as a descendant of Amalek. It’s possible that this is why the US +

Both in the story and in the world, it is right to critique instances of Jewish violence, and the violence of any traumatised people seeking vengeance. But to only blame the traumatised avengers is a mistake: it lets the King off the hook.

So we’re all agreed that the date of British politics rest in the hands of a small number of people in one constituency, in which a party will likely win with around 1/3 of the vote. Our brilliant electoral system strikes again.

For years it was claimed that first past the post was good because it kept out the far right. In Gorton and Denton, as well as in many seats in the next general election, it could well let the far right win with less than 1/3 of the vote. Electoral reform needs to become an anti-fascist priority.
