How an Attempted ICE Arrest Near Chicago Turned Deadly (Gift Article) The New York Times analyzed surveillance, police body-camera footage and bystander videos to understand what happened when an immigration agent shot and killed a motorist in a Chicago suburb.

Earlier this month, an ICE officer shot and killed Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, a Mexican immigrant, in a Chicago suburb. We analyzed surveillance, body cam and bystander videos, and found that key aspects of the DHS description of events do not hold up.

From Jan. 2023 to Aug. 2024, 299 human remains were reported in the El Paso sector, the most of any sector along the southern border. That’s more than double the number of cases reported during the 20 months prior.

Many were found in Doña Ana County, New Mexico

By 2024, the El Paso sector had become the deadliest place for migrants to cross along the entire U.S.-Mexico border.

Historically, Border Patrol’s El Paso sector — which includes New Mexico’s border with Mexico and El Paso and Hudspeth counties in west Texas — has had among the fewest migrant deaths across the southern border.

U.S. declares military zone around El Paso, allowing soldiers to arrest migrants It’s the second military zone the Trump administration has created at the border, following one on the New Mexico-Mexico border, where a group of migrants were arrested on Monday.

The Pentagon has created a second military zone in the El Paso area that U.S. soldiers will patrol as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to crack down on people crossing the southern border illegally, even as crossings are at a historic low.

Last month, ICE announced that it had arrested 48 people in a sweep in New Mexico. But local & state officials, and immigrants-rights advocates, can’t get any information about who was arrested or where they are. What actually happened? My latest: www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

NEW: The DC Circuit has DENIED the Trump administration's request to stay Judge Boasberg's halt on the use of the Alien Enemies Act! The decision is 2-1, with Trump appointee Judge Walker dissenting on jurisdictional grounds, arguing the lawsuit should have been brought in Texas.

Trump’s mass deportation plans have echoes of a 1950s federal crackdown that swept through Texas Seventy-one years after the Eisenhower administration launched a high-visibility operation to arrest undocumented immigrants, President Trump is following some of the same playbook.

In 1955, the head of immigration enforcement wrote, “wetback problem no longer exists.”

"The border has been secured,” he declared.

Seven decades later, Trump is doing what the Eisenhower administration said it already did: stop illegal immigration.
