A Gift from Below “A gift from the Heavens”- that’s what my parents call me, ever since I was born. My mother said that the pregnancy was difficult, that there was a very high chance that I wouldn’t make it. So, she and my father prayed to the stars above. Constantly. At the rising on the Sun, before each meal, at the Sun’s setting, even at night. And when I was finally born, they claimed that they could “see the very stars” in my eyes. But now I know the truth. For a while, though, I believed them. I would go out every night and look up, spending hours watching the stars. I guess I was hoping for something to happen, to feel a connection... But to be honest, no matter how long I spent outside, how much I craned my neck to watch the celestial movements, how hard I tried… I never felt anything. But the ground, however… I could feel it calling me. When I was younger, on rainy days I loved rolling around in the mud and every chance I got I would stick my hands deep into the dirt. My parents just chalked it up to me being a messy child, but even back then I knew there was something special about the ground. As I grew older and spent more time inside, I started to develop a terrible longing; but as the years passed, I completely forgot what for. Then I discovered my father had a terrible secret: one day, when he was a child, he got upset at the wind for stealing his kite away. So he cursed it. He cursed the wind in any way he could think of, and the God of Wind cursed him back, leaving him unable to ever have kids. You must be wondering, dear reader, how I found this out. Well, I found out the same way my mother did: by reading his meticulously kept diaries. Last year, after rediscovering my connection to the ground, I snuck into my father’s study, knowing he journaled everything since he was very young. Confused and upset, I immediately started researching the gods and how to break

their curses. But after weeks of research… I realized I should’ve never been born. I immediately, privately, confronted my mother, and after some convincing, she informed me that she too had discovered my father’s secret, after failing to bear a child for years. Distraught, she secretly traveled to various temples, starting with the Temple of the Goddess of Fertility. After her months of prayers fell on deaf ears, she found herself at the Temple of the Earth God. Inside, she was surprised to find a chiseled man, “as if he was carved from a block of high quality marble.” He held her as she cried her troubles and in the morning she started her journey home. When she arrived, my father asked her where she had been all this time and she told him that she spent the months praying at the Temple of the Goddess of Fertility. A few weeks later she informed him that she was child. He was too overjoyed to question it too much, probably assuming that the Goddess had broken his curse, especially considering the difficulties of the pregnancy and their constant prayers. After this revelation, I numbly walked to my room. How could my mother have done this? And my father, and his lies… I must have spent over a month in this numb condition, before my mother’s words echoed in my mind …“as if he was carved from a block of high quality marble…” I realized I had heard a similar description when researching the various gods- the Earth God. Did my mom…? Could I be…? But, surely not, right? I immediately went to the library and read up on everything about him. In the end, I concluded that my hunch was right: I am the daughter of the Earth God. I couldn’t bear to tell either of my parents though and kept my revaluation to myself. Now, you must be wondering why I’m writing all of this down. Well, a few months after my discovery, news broke of a feud between the Earth God and the God of Fire. At first, it didn’t seem a matter that us mortals should concern themselves with. But soon, the

dormant volcano that Zrane is at the base of showed signs of awakening. Whispers soon spread around Zrane like fire: -‘How could this be? Every year we sacrifice to both gods so that the volcano stays asleep.’- -‘This is a fight between the 2 gods. Why are they punishing us mortals then?!’- -‘Have they forsaken us? Did we not sacrifice enough?’- As the volcano became more active and the city’s concern grew, so did my feelings of connection to the earth. I knew I had to do something- no, I knew I could do something. But what? To the library I went again, this time looking for information on demigods. But I couldn’t find anything concrete, just legends and hearsay. So I went to the volcano to pray. And pray I did. For hours, into the night; I must have fallen asleep. Not getting a response, I decided to make my way home and snuck inside. I laid in bed, staring at the ceiling, before falling asleep. That was last night. When I woke up this morning, I think I was given the answer to my prayers. This is why I have decided to write everything down, just in case. I dreamed of the volcano and how I can quiet it. My feelings of connection are now replaced with an intense longing, deep inside me: it’s time for me to come home, my true home.
