title: Informal (De-)Regulation in the Marketplace of Ideas abstract: Democratic societies face tradeoffs regarding the production, acquisition, and exchange of information and ideas. On the one hand, they benefit from institutions that reduce the transaction costs citizens must pay to acquire reliable information they can use to pursue their goals; on the other hand, those institutions impose conformity costs on citizens’ belief systems. This has traditionally placed civil institutions such as the media, the scientific community, and political parties in the role of informal regulators, which set norms regarding the (combinations of) beliefs citizens should or should not express in lieu of the government setting rules regarding the beliefs citizens can or cannot express. I argue that the interaction of heightened political sectarianism with changes in the structure of the public sphere have weakened these institutions and altered the informal regulations that govern the proverbial “marketplace of ideas.” This framework illuminates recent phenomena of scholarly concern – namely, the health of the political information environment and the evolution of contemporary political ideologies.

tl;dr: taking the "marketplace of ideas" metaphor seriously requires taking the nuances of actually-existing markets seriously, which means thinking about tradeoffs between transaction costs and conformity costs. applied to misinfo and ideological belief systems.

ze willen natuurlijk 'innovatief onderzoek' financieren, maar de operationalisering van wat geldt als 'innovatief' is 'wat de reviewer of het panellid innovatief vindt'.

er is daarover geen beleid bij het FWO, en ook nauwelijks bewustzijn. In het kader van een van mijn andere interesses (science funding) zijn we wel in gesprek geweest over mogelijke samenwerking rond een aantal hypothesen, maar daar is uiteindelijk niets van gekomen.

het is dus niet onmogelijk, maar je hebt heel weinig kans met een 'rechts' of 'conservatief' onderzoeksproject. Ik heb ooit eens een berekening gemaakt hoe klein je kans is om geen negatieve review te krijgen bij zo'n project (WTD staat voor willingness to discriminate):

zelf heb ik wel wat ervaring met ideologisch gemotiveerde reviewers, en de dingen die ik schrijf zijn dan nog redelijk mainstream. Ik kan me dus voorstellen hoe moeilikjk het moet zijn om ideologisch erg controversieel onderzoek gefinancierd te krijgen. (fin)

het is zeker ook niet zo dat we meer neutrale academici nodig hebben in de linkse disciplines. Ideologie werkt sterk motiverend, en als je echt fouten wil vinden in 'rechtse' visies zal een links persoon daar beter in slagen dan een neutraal of rechts persoon. En omgekeerd natuurlijk. (6/x)

terwijl het niet interessant is om een creationist een beurs te geven om de evolutionaire consensus uit te dagen, zal het in de domeinen waar ik het net over had waarschijnlijk wel zinvol zijn. Begrijp wel: 'de consensus uitdagen' betekent niet dat de uitdager het bij het rechte eind heeft.(5/x)

als in die domeinen dan toch een consensus optreedt, dan lijkt de kans groot dat die consensus niet te maken heeft met het feit dat men echt een accuraat antwoord heeft gevonden. (4/x)

we weten dat de academie, ook in Vlaanderen en Nederland, overwegend links-progressief is. Dat is vooral (maar niet alleen!) zo in de geestes- en sociale wetenschappen. Laat dat nu net de domeinen zijn waar de thema's het vaakst aansluiten bij kwesties waarover in de politiek getwist wordt (2/x)
