Tbh, the pictures on the wall made me well up a tiny bit. Just the contrast between what looks like a remaining fragment of peaceful domesticity and, well, everything else.

Can we stop comparing *any* UK leaders with Churchill please? Thatcher wasnβt Churchill, Boris bloody Johnson wasnβt Churchill, and Keir Starmer wasnβt Churchill.
Even Churchill wasnβt the Churchill everyone imagines.
Just shut up about Churchill.

Day 4: A song in 5/4 time signature
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five
The ultimate 5/4 song! Basically a touchstone.

Can - Halleluwah
Didnβt think Iβd miss this opportunity to spread more Can among the masses, did you? βΊοΈ
You can't analyse this stuff. It's the foreign policy equivalent of free jazz.

Day 3: A song using polyrhythm
Radiohead - Let Down
Of course! Absolutely masterful, because it manages to still sound beautiful and not like a physics diagram. It just floats.
Shame, I was happily picturing a moody Reznor putting the mop to one side before yelling "Terrible lie!" into the mic. π Thanks for the info.

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
Apparently Reznor was working as a janitor and recorded this in a basement. I don't know if that's true or not and I don't want to look it up, because actually I really like the mythology of it.

Nirvana - Bleach
I think it's really beautiful that they were the biggest band on the planet just 3-4 years after this was released.
Oh, I didnβt know that!

SinΓ©ad O'Connor - The Lion and the Cobra
Mandinka on the radio, I inform my wife itβs SinΓ©ad O'Connor. "Is it? Itβs really good!" I agree.

N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
At school, we listened to this in awe, like NO WAY did they just say that. The album has lost its shock value since, not because it or I aged but because everything addressed here is still true and exists today.

Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush The Show
The first of three incredible albums, and this oneβs already a clear statement of intent. Basically the moment where political hip hop became impossible to ignore.
Yep, me too. π

The Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Easy to forget how radical and unlike anything else this sounded in 1985. Took its cue from the VU and punk but set the template for shoegaze and alternative rock, making it one of the most influential albums from that era.

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Yeah, I think this one could do rather well. Thereβs a reason for it though: itβs bloody brilliant. Also has some personal relevance for me, as I listened to it a LOT in my first Summer after moving to England.
Hi folks, thanks to everyone who took the time to vote in #5debutalbums0509 Just under 400 different albums were nominated and coming out top of the pile were Fleet Foxes with their self titled debut. Please see the top 100 chart to follow, where the top 30 progress to the semi final stage..

Day 27: A song you consider a masterpiece
The B-52s - Rock Lobster
A product of the post-punk era but also an amalgamation of post-war American pop culture: surf rock, rockabilly, some Yoko Ono (Lennon noticed!), itβs all there, but still fun and original.
Oh, thatβs a good one. Probably my favourite Doors song. That piano bit is just wonderful.

Post a jedi... wrong answers only:
FWIW, in the Star Wars sequel trilogy that exists in MY head, itβs Jar Jar who ends up saving the universe because a) it kind of actually makes sense from a dramaturgical standpoint (why else introduce him in Ep I), and b) trolling haters is fun.
