Watch the video: Are foreign takeovers good for Canada's economy? We all want more investment in Canada's economy. But as SCP Chair Jon Shell explains in this video, when it comes to foreign investment in the Canadian economy, or FDI, we have to ask: is it investmen...

The Canadian government has been bragging about its FDI numbers lately. This is misleading. High M&A FDI is NOT good.

Much of this FDI is worse than neutral -- it actually hurts our economic resilience and economic security.

We have videos!

Trump, Vance and MAGA are part of a global authoritarian movement at war with democracies.

At the moment it is a cold war, but their alliance with dictators and their contempt for human rights and the rule of law is clear to everyone, except those whose mental frameworks are stuck in the 1980s.

Trustworthy, predictable allies matter.

For Canada, the EU is a reliable ally. The US obviously is not.

The idea that people in Alberta think they should separate and make themselves more vulnerable is batshit.

You don't think all the fretting about Canada not having an entrepreneurial culture and not having enough entrepreneurs is a description of the demand side?

Which assumptions? Which problem are you talking about and how do governments look at it the wrong way?

We might completely agree...

But you might not be typical and your business might be the kind that is set up in a way that matches banks' criteria.

Market study submission: Competition in financing for Canada's SMEs Small- and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) face significant barriers to accessing capital and we believe that the lack of competition in the banking sector is one of several important contributing fact...

That is not what the evidence says or the experience of SMEs. @scpartners.bsky.social will have a paper out on this in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, check out this (and always happy for criticism): socialcapitalpartners.ca/market-study...

I'm not sure what you disagree with, specifically.

I think we can talk about "root causes" forever and there is more than one. But our big banks dominate enterprise financing in Canada, and they aren't set up to know, understand or lend to many viable businesses.

03.03.2026 19:39 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You're so linear, Mike. I think these are loops.

Our SME financing system in Canada is not good. Our big banks are not set up in a variety of ways to do a good supporting the full diversity of small enterprises in Canada. That is a problem.

That's very sweet, Richard. Nice to hear from you.

(Do you want money, is that it? Are you looking for a loan?)

Governments have done that a lot. It helps sometimes. Accelerated capital cost allowance for example, which I think is a good idea. But most countries incent these things, and many do it more effectively.

Canada's actions haven't changed the overall trajectory.

Well, I'm glad you were with me for a while!

On your first point, it is both. We have incentivized investment in housing, which has inflated assets and made things less affordable for middle class people.

And allowing our IP, wealth, ownership and tax revenues to navigate to the US does hurt.

Canada needs to increase its productivity performance. But we keep talking about the wrong things.

What would actually help?

The American people mostly resist fascism.

The American institutions of wealth and power mostly accommodate themselves to evil to protect themselves and maybe make a few bucks.

Going through my basement and I found this. A deep cut.

Good thing we fixed Employment Insurance. It would be a shame if during a period of profound labour market disruption Canada's social architecture was not fit-for-purpose.

SMEs and entrepreneurs are not well served by Canada's financing system, which is dominated by big banks.

The Competition Bureau is studying whether more diverse financing options would help. @scpartners.bsky.social has prepared a submission. πŸ‘‡

There's always a market for tax info that fuels the smug critic, from any perspective. But that's just about ego and narrow self-interest

If there's a single good reason for studying tax seriously, it's the lessons it offers in seeing and weighing multiple conflicting perspectives

The same people who say government is bad at everything also believe that government bureaucracies will be able to accurately predict labour market changes and needs. Magical thinking.

We bought a house in Roncy in 2016 in part because we would be right next to a new community centre that was being built.

It is now 10 years later and the abandoned rotting building has still not been torn down. Notional progress on paper but no visible progress in the real world.
