Clearly that would work in a lot of places. But I can only really speak to my experiences living here in San Francisco, where I have lived in 6 different apartment buildings that don’t have any parking at all. For most people here, street parking is the only option

It started with Nixon, further exploited by Reagan. Then Gingrich came in and blew up the norms that had been keeping congress in check. With Bush v. Gore, SCOTUS began the process of dismantling the norms of the courts, extending the rot through Citizens United. Dems never fought back forcefully.

I fear the trend is spreading. I was just visiting London over the holidays, and found that Co-Op has dairy-free Bakewell tarts, so I decided to try them. They were half icing, and you couldn’t even taste the frangipane. I ate one and then gave the rest to friends.

Both are necessary. Both are of basically equal importance. That’s why hiring for these positions usually takes several months - finding the right candidate is tough

Governments can be big, and do things, and also not get in the way of stuff like this. China is a prime example where a big government is building out tons of transmission, and renewable generation, and high-speed electric rail, very very quickly.

Smithsonian removes Trump impeachment text as it swaps his portrait A Trump official previously complained about a caption beside his National Portrait Gallery photo mentioning his impeachments and the U.S. Capitol insurrection.

Except for things like SyQuest and Bernoulli, which were removable hard drive platters in a plastic disk-like enclosure. While not as common, just about every school computer lab and every Kinko’s I went to had them in the early- to mid-β€˜90s

My hope is that in the race for raw materials, this will drive the development of large-scale and more-affordable desalination facilities, with the added benefit of providing fresh water for the surrounding areas.

People also don’t seem to understand that a typical repower schedule for solar or wind generation is roughly 30 years. The degradation curve is extremely slow. People also miss that utility-scale batteries are built to have a much longer usable lifespan than consumer batteries

Criminal? Best case scenario, it's alleged criminal - he's only been indicted, not convicted. But more importantly, leader of a sovereign nation who we don't have jurisdiction over. Depending on the charges, this should be a matter for the ICC or ICJ.

I spent the last two years in Puno for Candelaria, playing music with an indigenous panpipe ensemble. It’s two weeks of nonstop Cristal and Pilsen Callao. And if you’re very unlucky, Chanka Kichachi, β€œla abre piernas” - it’s sort of a cross between rum and mead, notorious for awful hangovers

That and…this horrifying statue of one, making friend with some sheep. There’s a more ridiculous-looking alpaca statue to the left. That area can get pretty foggy at times.

My first time in Peru, I did Lima -> Huancayo -> Ayacucho -> Andahuaylas -> Cusco -> Puno -> Arequipa -> Lima, all on bus, in 2.5 weeks. All of the roads from the time I left Huancayo until I arrived in Arequipa, were dirt roads. I’m about to go back for the 7th time, and most of it is paved now

YouTube video by Railway Archives Great Railway Journeys of the World (1980) - 6 - Three Miles High (PERU-BOLIVIA)

BTW, this journey is no longer possible, but it’s an amazing look at the train route across southern Peru in 1980. I saw this on PBS as a kid, and it inspired me. By the time I first went there in 2009, the Lima -> Huancayo train only ran 1x/week

When I was 18 and had no money, I took Greyhound from St. Louis to central Oregon to see my grandfather. It was 3 days of continuous mishaps and missed connections. But Amtrak also would’ve taken 3 days, and would’ve cost as much as flying. It was my only option, and I got some stories out of it πŸ˜‚

I’ve ridden lots of coaches in Peru and Bolivia, and I have to say it’s extremely variable. There are some nice lines like Cruz del Sur. There are also ones that will make you question all of your life choices. For some routes like Puno <-> Arequipa, the option is a 15 pass van for 6 hours

What’s most disappointing in reading this is the active role of the NYT science desk in spreading transphobic disinformation. Really shameful what Azeen Ghoryashi (used to respect her for covering sexual harassment in science) and Virginia Hughes did to twist science for their anti-trans campaign.

Some of these distinctions exist in Spanish as well, such as espΓritu vs fantasma. Some of what he’s leaning on here are false cognates. However, a Spanish teacher originally from Spain told me that English is the international language of business, because it’s much harder to be deceptive in it.

It’s because there’s a massive power outage in San Francisco, and the archive.org headquarters are in the affected area. It seems to have been a fire in an electric substation half-way across the city
