Andrée Borrel (1919–1944) was a courageous French resistance fighter and one of the first female agents sent into Nazi-occupied France by Britain’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II. Known by the codename "Denise," she worked as a courier and organizer for the Prosper circuit, one of the most important resistance networks in France. Born near Paris, Borrel served as a nurse during the Spanish Civil War and later joined the French Red Cross during the Nazi invasion. Her resistance activities began with helping Allied soldiers escape France. After fleeing to England, she trained in espionage, sabotage, and parachuting before being dropped into France in 1942—just days after fellow agent Lise de Baissac. Borrel coordinated safe houses, arms drops, and sabotage missions, often under extreme danger. In June 1943, she was arrested by the Gestapo, imprisoned, and later deported to Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp. There, on July 6, 1944, she was executed by lethal injection and cremated—alongside fellow agent Sonia Olschanezky. Though only 24 at the time of her death, Andrée Borrel’s bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice left an enduring legacy. She was posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre and Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Today, she is remembered as one of the unsung heroines who risked everything to fight tyranny and protect freedom.
