The workflow illustrates a step-by-step process for conducting causal analyses. Arrows indicate the typical flow of an analysis. Two possible pathways are shown: causal discovery approaches (blue), which aim to identify the existence of causal relationships when pre-existing knowledge is low, and causal inference approaches (yellow), which aim to quantify the direction and magnitude of causal effects when pre-existing knowledge is high. The gray feedback loop on the right highlights the iterative refinement of causal analyses based on assessments of the plausibility of causal assumptions.

So, y'all have heard me going on about #causalinference in #ecology a lot. Now our big synthetic guide "Best practices for moving from correlation to causation in ecological research" is out! Led by Hannah Correia & Paul Ferraro, it's a great walk-through for all! 🌍πŸ§ͺ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I think some have been warning of this for some time, especially in the less popular more populist ecological/conservation circles of reintros, rewilds, trophy hunting, carbon and farming etc

Meta-analysis is ubiquitous in ecology, but it is poor at determining which conservation interventions work in which contexts

That’s why we’ve developed Precision Ecology, using methods developed in, eg, medicine to inform precise, data-informed conservation

A Robin is perched on a weathered wooden surface, its bright orange-red breast puffed up and beak wide open in full song. The blurred background creates a soft gradient of earthy tones, making the Robin stand out. With its legs firmly planted and feathers fluffed, it looks as if it’s passionately delivering an important message to the world.

is it misunderstanding or clash of different values - increasingly then engaging on wildlife "management" the quoted word just gets mocked by the nature/wildlife interested public - as if purist rewilding is now the only game in town - which of course it is only one of many solutions
