Once rare in Nevada, winter bald eagle sightings now common Fresh snow blanketed the ground and the temperature hovered around 20 degrees when Will Richardson stepped from his heated vehicle to walk onto Lake Forest Beach on Lake Tahoe’s east shore. Richardson, who was out despite battling a cold, has repeated the same early-January routine for years, first as a volunteer and up-and-coming wildlife expert, and now as executive director of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS).

After a stint on the endangered species list, their comeback is seen as a “conservation success story.” Bald eagle numbers around Lake Tahoe reflect that.

Northern Nevada backyards and gardens: Check your bluebird boxes ASAP February snuck up on me. I had been saying to myself “It’s time to clean out the bluebird boxes.” Then, with all this warm weather, I saw a pair of bluebirds (scientific name: Sialia mexicana) that were already checking out the boxes. I decided to check a different box where I didn’t see activity. I suited up with a bandana on my head, safety glasses, face mask, rubber gloves and even a rubber rain jacket.

Prompted by seeing a pair of bluebirds recently, columnist JoAnne Skelly suited up to clean out old residue inside her bluebird boxes.

Supervisors decline Planning Commission recommendation, approve State exemption from Downtown Standards On Thursday, Carson City Supervisors voted to reject the recommendation of denial made by the Planning Commission last week regarding the state’s request to be removed from Carson City downtown design standards. Much of the angst felt by the community and commissioners seems to be the fact that the state still has not presented a master plan or design elements about the project they intend to build.

With the approval in hand, state officials said they are planning on starting construction next month. On why they couldn't provide a mock up of the design, they said the Governor ran on a platform of "get stuff done" rather than spending years developing planning documents.
