General perception of public sector, in other words, is all this negative stuff aimed at folks marked as useless/dangerous and “not them.” Things that benefit us all are invisible. Sadly, they may have to go away before they become visible. Hopefully there will still be time to bring them back.

In explaining the concept of the State, I’ve done an exercise with Gen Ed students: ask them to name things tax $ pay for. First answers almost always things like welfare, prisons, police, etc. With some coaxing someone will eventually timidly offer “fire department?”, “roads?”.
