First Class of Incarcerated Students Earn Degrees From Northwestern University Dignitaries turned out for the commencement ceremony honoring 16 men who earned bachelor’s degrees from Northwestern University through the Northwestern Prison Education Program.

“What you have accomplished here flies in the face of all the assumptions and stereotypes that have been heaped upon you,” Gov. Pritzker said. "To that I say: Don’t ever stop defying those expectations."

I really appreciate you seeing the value in our writers' work. All we can do is control what we can control. In terms of the legal system, it starts with equipping incarcerated writers with the resources and tools necessary to tell their stories on their terms. It's a long but worthwhile fight.

I saw my coworkers having so much fun sharing our work and connecting with our audience here, I couldn't stand being left out any longer!

I'm excited to finally join in and have the chance to share some of our work and get to know the people who value it so much.
