At least these days most people distribute software in ".AppImage" format for Linux. Back in the day if it wasn't on the repo you'd likely have to compile from scratch.
But most of it is up on the package manager. 90% of the windows managers work like update form of some kind of windows

Most people just start with mint. But with Linux you will eventually have to use the terminal. Which isn't too bad but if you never worked w/out a GUI it's a learning curve
