Impact of DHS Agent Surge on Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metro Area Labor Outcomes | North Star Policy Action

New research with @aaronsojourner.org of the @upjohninstitute.bsky.social posted on @northstarpolicy.org's blog. We find that Operation Metro Surge caused declines in employees working, hours worked, and businesses open, leading to an estimated $106 million wage loss for Twin Cities workers.

Awful to see these enormous layoffs at the National Employment Law Project. For more than five decades, NELP's staff have been working to raise wages, strengthen the safety net, and hold corporations accountable.

Minnesota's 2023 DFL trifecta banned managers from forcing employees to attend anti-union "captive audience" meetings.

Heard about an organizing campaign where, instead, mgmt offers Let Your Voice Be Heard, open-door, drop-in hours each day.

No one's goes. Mgmt's embarrassed. Cancelled 'em.

Unemployment insurance for striking workers: A low-cost policy that’s good for workers and state economies Lawmakers across the country are increasingly recognizing that making striking workers eligible for unemployment insurance (UI) is good for workers and good economics.

And @rrepnnad.bsky.social studied the practical (and positive) impact of unemployment insurance for striking workers in this report

Unemployment insurance: State solutions to the U.S. worker rights crisis What does current federal law say about unemployment insurance? Established in the wake of the Great Depression through the Social Security Act of 1935, unemployment insurance (UI) is a critical safet...

Before 2008, workers in every state were guaranteed 26 weeks of unemployment insurance if they lost a job. Today, many states have cut back benefits, some to as little as 12 weeks. With the economy teetering, unemployment benefits are more important than ever.

About 8% of people lacked any form of health insurance in 2024. Unfortunately that rate will dramatically increase in the coming years, from 27 million to more than 40 million thanks to Republicans who cut Medicaid and ACA marketplace subsidies

The labor market continues to soften, according to the latest #JobsReport out this morning from the BLS. Payroll employment grew only 22,000 in August and revisions now show employment losses for June (-13,000). Over the last three months, job growth has slowed to just 29,000 on average.

Corporate America has been waging a war against the trade union movement for a simple reason:

They know that union workers earn higher wages and better benefits than non-union workers.

To me, today's jobs report is what entering a recession looks like. Could we pull up? Sure. But if we look back and end up dating an official recession that starts 3-6 months from now, this is what it would look like today - rapid softening/deterioration in the labor market.

Big news in today's #jobs report are the revisions. The labor market is much weaker than originally reported the last two months. While payrolls grew 73k in July, May and June data were revised down a total of 258k to 19k and 14k, respectively, bringing 3-month average growth down to 35k.

Today's #UIClaims data continue to show significantly higher continued unemployment insurance claims for federal workers than this time last year, up 59% for the week ending July 12 (compared to the same week last year). Hard to ignore when the divergence in trend began.

🚨🚨 The Senate just funded Trump's mass deportation agenda.

If the House approves the bill, the resulting increase in arrests, detentions, and deportations will cause millions of immigrant and US-born workers to lose their jobs

A bar chart titled "If Congress approves the Republican budget bill, Trump's mass deportation agenda will destroy nearly six million jobs."

The chart displays the "Employment reductions after four years of one million annual deportations" across three categories:

    Immigrant: 3,316,000 jobs lost

    US-born: 2,571,000 jobs lost

    Overall: 5,887,000 jobs lost

A note at the bottom states: "Assuming 670,000 additional annual deportations for four years above a baseline annual deportation rate of 330,000." The source is cited as "Analysis of East et al (2023) as described in the text."

Now that Congress has passed the Republican spending bill, "[if] Trump succeeds in carrying out his deportation goals...5.9 million workers will lose their jobs over the next 4 years"--3.3 million immigrants and 2.6 million US-born workers.

The day after Lamont vetoed #UIforStrikingWorkers in CT, the Governor of Oregon signed a similar bill into law! And the Governor of Washington State signed their version into law last month.

Protecting working people has only become more urgent since the Trump Administration has gutted the NLRB.
