In terrible news, it does sound like pokopia will not be forward compatible, so it will require a switch 2.
But I can say that a lot of games that run terribly on switch 1 are flawless for me on switch 2.
Looking at you, Zelda TOTK and Pokémon SV...

You can play a lot of switch 2 games on original switch. Could help you to navigate whether or not to upgrade consoles.
The forward compatible games are labeled, and you can always ask before buying a game.
