Issues does not degrade the notion of expertise. It is an exercise in democratic deliberation, freedom of speech and political participation.

In any case, more generally, professional associations can also make statements about political issues, not only about issues concerning their main area of expertise. Political issues are of concern to all citizens. Including professional associations.

Knowledge of relevante facts is widely available. Expertise on moral atrocities and genocide is also not unique to philosophers, but the main philosophical association can also speak on the issue given their collective professional knowledge.

I don’t see why philosophers are not experts on what counts as a genocide. It’s an issue where philosophical expertise seems extremely relevant.
