Ike Opara arrived in Minnesota ahead of the 2019 season and instantly transformed the Loons from a struggling backline into one of the most formidable defensive units in Major League Soccer. During his stellar 2019 campaign, he helped the club reach its first-ever Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, earned MLS Best XI honors, and was named the MLS Defender of the Year—the second time he won the award in his career.

LA Galaxy waive veteran forward Christian Ramirez In a surprising roster move right at the start of the 2026 season, the LA Galaxy announced on Saturday that they have waived forward Christian Ramirez and exercised a buyout of his contract. A sudden departure from Southern California The transaction abruptly ends the Santa Ana native’s homecoming. Ramirez initially joined the Galaxy in February 2025 via a trade with the Columbus Crew.

Christian Ramirez will now enter the MLS waiver process. If he clears waivers without being claimed by another club, the veteran striker will become a free agent, free to sign with any team of his choosing.

Tracking former Loons across MLS ahead of the 2026 roster compliance deadline With the 2026 MLS roster compliance deadline arriving tonight at 7 p.m. CT, clubs across the league are putting the final touches on their squads. As the new campaign kicks off this weekend, there are 14 former Minnesota United players scattered across 13 different MLS rosters. Here is a quick look at the familiar faces we will be keeping an eye on this year.

As of right now, we're tracking 14 former Loons scattered across 13 different MLS rosters. But, that could change with the 7 p.m. CT deadline for 2026 MLS roster compliance.

A few former Loons are on MLS NEXT squads now and could move up to senior squads.

We'll keep you posted.

Alexis Fariña reportedly set to end loan with Minnesota United, returning to Paraguay The short-lived Minnesota United career of Alexis Fariña appears to be coming to a close before his first full season in MLS even kicks off. Reports out of Paraguay indicate that the 21-year-old attacking midfielder's loan is being terminated, paving the way for a move to Club Sportivo 2 de Mayo. According to the president of 2 de Mayo, Hugo Romero, a verbal agreement is already in place to bring the youngster back to his home country, with the club simply waiting on the final signatures to make it official.

Alexis Fariña's time in Minnesota appears to be coming to an early end. Reports out of Paraguay indicate the 21-year-old is terminating his loan to join 2 de Mayo.

So, now we'll be tracking 2 de Mayo matches, and we'll let you know when Fariña logs minutes with his new squad.

Luke Hille’s road to recovery after a breakout start Luke Hille arrived in Minnesota in March 2025, signing a one-year MLS NEXT Pro contract with MNUFC2. The forward from Cary, North Carolina, joined the club after a successful collegiate career, spending three years at NC State before playing his senior season at the University of North Carolina. Hille wasted no time making an impact. By August of his debut professional season, he was leading MNUFC2 in scoring with nine goals across 17 games.

Former Loon forward Luke Hille suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in August and underwent a season-ending surgery. Now, he's a free agent looking for a new club and focusing on recovery.
