Raising the former, it's getting more interested when you filter out aerial contests. If Steyn's forced to jump before fielding, the success rate drops to 50%

Steyn attempted to field 17 kicks with a success ratio of 52.9%. Overall, #Scotland gained possession after 12 kicks. The recently fashionable tap-backs are the main factor explaining the 9-to-12 difference. The success ratio increases to 70.6% once the gained possessions are considered

Spot on! It'd be difficult to estimate without horrendus bias if it wouldn't so.

In other words you'd have a matrix with the pitch position (or, as we used it in football 🏈, the yards-to-go) as one of the vectors.

Isn't it a standard ML model trained on the historical data (you mentioned some historical bias earlier) with features like pass, kick, Opp22 entries, pens etc?

Brett has just re-defined #rugby analytics visualisations for social media. Perhaps for rugby performance analytics, too.
