I am a Virginia Master Naturalist. I'm sharing my journey of converting my suburban half acre yard into a no-lawn native plant paradise! Feel free to ask me questions about Virginia native plants! #Virginia #nativeplants #goingnative

The gov is proposing removing indirect causes of mortality, such as habitat destruction, oil spills, wind turbines etc, from the #EndangeredSpeciesAct Please leave a comment on why protecting #habitat is important. #nativeplants

04.05.2025 10:54 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0March 1. There are some signs of green among the leaves. The sticks look pretty bad, and I'm itching to get rid of them.
April 1. The new growth looks great, but I'm still wanting to get rid of those sticks.
May 1. A few sticks? Who cares?! Most have fallen over, or been overgrown by new growth.
Leaving the sticks and stems... Here's what it looks like on March 1, April 1, and May 1! I'll add another in June, when the plants will probably be blooming.

Yes. I had to wrench a huge one out of a crack this spring. No fun at all!
04.04.2025 17:55 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0My bottlebrush grass (Elymus histrix) self sows. Just enough for me to spread and share, not so much that I am afraid it is taking over. So, it is easy to germinate for me.
04.04.2025 00:34 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I put a few pieces of native Sedum (Sedum ternatum) around these very large stepping stones a few years ago. They have filled in so nicely!

Every Monday, I'm counting the native species in bloom in my 1/2 acre yard near Richmond, Virginia. March 31 - 18 species! Including the ones in the pics.
01.04.2025 11:48 — 👍 18 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I used it once. I was told it would "break down in a few years". Several years later, shreds of it were everywhere. And it didn't stop the weeds. It's probably still in visible chunks, but I don't live there anymore.

Dutchman's breeches (Dicentra cucullaria) is a real cutie! Just a few inches tall. Blooming today, will be dormant in early May. It's only above ground for about 2 months!

Toadshade Trillium (Trillium sessile) getting ready to bloom. Pretty foliage. I'm glad to see it multiplying a little!

29.03.2025 02:28 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0These studies are challenging. Needs to be multiple locations, multiple years. One needs to record who is visiting the flowers and who is missing. Also, one needs to record all the other animals dependent on the flowers, leaves, seeds, etc. Nobody is doing this.
