Cuts to CDC programs that reduce gun violence and support mental health, and anti-science rhetoric from political appointees set the stage for this senseless act of violence. Yesterday, after hours of hiding, trying not to make a sound, we stepped outside and saw massive bullet holes in our office windows.

Those weren’t random shots. That was a high-powered weapon no civilian should ever own.

Conspiracies aren’t harmless chatter. In 2016, a man stormed a D.C. pizzeria over the fake “Pizzagate” story. In 2019, the El Paso shooter killed 23 over the “Great Replacement” lie. Politicians who weaponize lies for power bear that blame — and Trump is a master at it.

The events of yesterday are sinking in and we are all feeling very shaken up.
