One big difference was wages. As a young postdoc in S Yorks (Sheffield Uni), but living in Barnsley. Many coal miners earned about twice as much as I did.

I had a fascinating conversation with an economist when I arrived at Sheffield Uni from Dublin in late '81. I remarked that the manufacturing jobs and industrial output of S Yorks alone were greater than Ireland. He said it would all be gone in 10 years, and the retraining costs would be enormous.

I spent my childhood inside of American concentration camps. I know one when I see one. And that is what ICE is building.

I'm not sure much effort was put into finding a solution. Certainly not in S Yorks where I was based from 81-85. Liverpool fared better.

I was a keen Labour member in the mid 90's but left after the
Iraq War. I joined the Greens after talking to Caroline Lucas about a decade ago. It's easy being Green when you don't have to implement actual policy.

We are in a mixed marriage. I am a Green Party member, and my wife is Labour (she is the current constituency chair)

Nice to see some optimism. It does feel like things are shifting in the right direction, for a change.

I'm not visiting the US till there is regime change, which may not be in my lifetime. A shame, because I have not only visited many times but also lived there.

I did the experimental work at the Harvard Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and have many friends and colleagues who work there. I thought it was the greatest country on earth. One friend has just quit her job at NASA, which she used to love.
