19.02.2026 09:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One big difference was wages. As a young postdoc in S Yorks (Sheffield Uni), but living in Barnsley. Many coal miners earned about twice as much as I did.
19.02.2026 09:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I had a fascinating conversation with an economist when I arrived at Sheffield Uni from Dublin in late '81. I remarked that the manufacturing jobs and industrial output of S Yorks alone were greater than Ireland. He said it would all be gone in 10 years, and the retraining costs would be enormous.
18.02.2026 11:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Screenshot of a CNN segment shared by Acyn. A split-screen shows commentator Lydia Moynihan on the left and Kevin OβLeary on the right during a heated exchange. The chyron reads, βObama: Dems need to avoid scolding and βvirtue-signaling.ββ The post quotes OβLeary referencing China and concentration camps, and McGowan responding about West Virginia.
I spent my childhood inside of American concentration camps. I know one when I see one. And that is what ICE is building.
17.02.2026 21:00 β π 36718 π 11205 π¬ 1004 π 377I'm not sure much effort was put into finding a solution. Certainly not in S Yorks where I was based from 81-85. Liverpool fared better.
18.02.2026 11:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Beautiful day in Northumberland as well
14.02.2026 17:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One way mirror?
14.02.2026 10:00 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0Sadly yes. Possibly, it is herd mentality and personal Charisma (though I find Trump vile and obscene). It is alsoPress consolidation. Trump has much of the media behind him, whereas Starmer is viciously and unfairly attacked at every turn.
09.02.2026 08:59 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Our PV system is currently producing 3W (mid-afternoon) and has produced 400Wh so far this week. In the best week of summer, it can produce 100 kWh. Northumberland can be grim in winter
06.02.2026 15:10 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I remember it well from my postgrad years at UCD. I shared an office with Denis, who loved this song. Denis now lives in Paris - maybe he felt the urge to explore his French soul?
06.02.2026 13:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Mandelson moved in the same sleezy circles as Trump, which is exactly why he got the appointment. Iy made perfect sense and I, for one, held my nose and ignored the stench.
06.02.2026 09:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Not much better in Northumberland.

I was a keen Labour member in the mid 90's but left after the
Iraq War. I joined the Greens after talking to Caroline Lucas about a decade ago. It's easy being Green when you don't have to implement actual policy.
We are in a mixed marriage. I am a Green Party member, and my wife is Labour (she is the current constituency chair)
03.02.2026 18:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have reposted on my LinkedIn feed as I have many more astrophysical contact there than on BlueSky www.linkedin.com/in/sean-dana...
31.01.2026 15:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I was at a staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream there many years ago, where the audience and players wandered around the rocks.
29.01.2026 13:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Nice to see some optimism. It does feel like things are shifting in the right direction, for a change.
27.01.2026 15:30 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm not visiting the US till there is regime change, which may not be in my lifetime. A shame, because I have not only visited many times but also lived there.
26.01.2026 09:28 β π 6 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I did the experimental work at the Harvard Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and have many friends and colleagues who work there. I thought it was the greatest country on earth. One friend has just quit her job at NASA, which she used to love.

22.01.2026 20:52 β π 6 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0Not here in Northumberland for sure. Though it is clear in the observatory I used to work in in Arizona
22.01.2026 20:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Blue tick richly deserved. I will look out for the blog on Friday.
