It should become pretty easy to support transcoding for uploads to websites.

For a social site with apps, some more work. But OS APIs and the backwards compatibility of JPG ISO gain maps offers a lot of flexibility (don’t have to do all at once, legacy devices are automatically ok, etc).

Would be amazing to see HDR here. I think the focused efforts on ISO gain maps (libultrahdr, InageMagick, Apple APIs, etc) should help improve distribution options. Hopefully that shows visible results in H2 ‘25.

Chrome 131 had a bug affecting gain maps. It has been resolved, though Meta is still serving SDR to 131. The 132 beta works great and should be in general release within a week.

It’s getting better all the time. Instagram and Threads offer a great way to use it now, and most people on the platforms will see the HDR image (given most smart phones support it and >90% of the audience there will be viewing on a smart phone).
