Compare 6/5 and 7/6. Both 1 and a bit... so compare 1/5 and 1/6. 1/5 is larger as the pieces are larger (I explicitly discuss this with students now) so 6 miles in 5 mins is faster

Are you teaching it alongside GCSE or on its own? I think the different contexts mean that one scheme rarely works for anyone.

I sew and crochet which both use quite a bit of maths, especially whilst altering patterns or working out how to construct things (I'm not just talking counting stitches and measuring) But they wouldn't be called maths hobbies.

I wish I could have gone to it but it clashed with my own unfortunately!

I usually start with the abcd grid and ask them what they notice, so I sort of lead them in that direction (or in fact I've started with 2 digit numbers before I think)

I teach a variation of ac method but use a grid which I think makes it less procedural and more logical:

In #ALevelMaths today we looked at why inverse matrices work, which I am very happy about. I haven’t taught this before and was getting cross at the seemingly random stuff to learn! I didn’t do matrices until my degree and that was a loooong time ago. #MathsToday

I loved it. Other classics that I really rate are East of Eden and The Old Man And The Sea. Would love more recommendations of great classics (esp ones that are v cheap on Kindle!)

I meet a tricky y9 group tomorrow, my own children have just told me I need to tell them how they are all aiming for grades 6, 7 in the future and move my hands, not sure I can pull it off though (and think I'll lose the group completely!)

I read a great blog the other day, presumably recent as I found it through a weekly digest. It talked about breaking down tricky topics and used the hormones in the menstrual cycle as an example. Now I can't find it - any ideas please? My son is studying this and there was a great diagram! Thnx

Yes - and more. I love it. Download the app and have a go yourself, it's been my go-to phone calc for a while now and I've only recently discovered what it can do at A Level. And the nice people at @numworks.bsky.social sent me a free calc when I started teaching A Level with it.

And I find them much more intuitive than the Casio which I've never got to grips with.

@mathsjem.bsky.social just reading your latest blog and I do sympathise with your stance on graphical calcs at A Level. We changed to @numworks.bsky.social and a benefit is it has a free identical phone app, so you could just have a school set to lend out for exams to save them buying?
