If D&D is a hobby you're interested in 1. Welcome! 2. There are a plethora of free resources you can use to get into the hobby before making an investment.
The wotc and d&d websites as well as dndbeyond have freebies that you can use.

In my honest opinion,
It's not a bad product and outside of the adventure it makes a few improvements over the previous starter set.

HOWEVER, when reading the adventure I got the distinct feeling that I wasn't in the target audiences age range.
It feels made for the younger players.

The "First Year Five" were already well recognised amongst their peers, but now... Now the entire cohort turns to look at the party, as they walk with Shayla Laurent "The Swamp Witch in Black", the first student to openly show that they are a member of the Aberrant House.

"But them robes, they mean something cher... And no one's go putten' them snakes back in tha' can once et's open..."
Shayla is too nervous to go to class in 'those' robes, so the party offer to stand by her as she walks to class...

The party find Shayla Laurent in the halls of the first year dorms having an anxiety attack over her last set of clean robes being drenched in coffee and gravy. They try to calm the woman down and as they do, Shayla let's slip that she has another set of robes hidden away...

With the first semester midterms over a sense of normalcy begins to reside over the students. The party starts a more eventful week with a lecture into Symbology and the "Multi-point theory of Elementalism" before being introduced to a fellow first year.
