The absolute best books I have *EVER* read on the lead-up to and aftermath of WW1 have come from Margaret MacMillan ("The War That Ended Peace" and "Paris 1919"). Incredibly thorough yet also written in a very accessible manner - I cannot recommend them highly enough.
