good morning! new from me in @strangehorizons.bsky.social today, a review of Alexandra McCollum's Into the Midnight Wood, in which I vent some frustrations with the current state of the cozy romcom fantasy novel
(I liked this one tho!)
This is an excellent review. Who amongst the ranks of reviewers has not sometimes thought "Is this a good book? I don’t know. What even does it mean to be good?" Few of us, however, have the courage to put this thought in a review, and for this (and many other delights) I salute Jenny and SH.

Who's a big fan of @readingtheend.bsky.social? The whole internet, that's who.
Really pleased Jenny is back at SH with this review on a curious romcomantasy (it's her term, don't @ me).

Apologies to all my friends on Substack. I'd gritted my teeth and supported you because I love your work. But Substack's partnership with Polymarket is the last straw for me.

The fact that this sort of thing isn’t the norm in every fantasy novel drives me absolutely batty.

As someone who's been an avid women's hockey fan since the 24-25 PWHL season, the last few days have been...a lot. Don't get me wrong, the women's game is not perfectly progressive* and watching them is not a solution to misogyny.

Another Hugo nomination-time thread! And in this one, I'll be talking about novellas.
(this thread will probably go long, sorry-not-sorry)
keep seeing people talking about Hugo and Nebula nominations which means it is my professional duty to remind you that nominations for the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize open on SUNDAY

1. BS apology from the host
2. Zero apology from BAFTAS
2a. No editing of the broadcast
3. N-word hurled more than once
4. No acts of care or concern towards MBJ or Delroy, Black people
5. Zero accommodations for safety
6. All during BHM
The disrespect is in outer space at this point.
The Core. Ridiculous premise. Ridiculous science. Incredible character work by actors who were clearly having a blast.
