As a domestic researcher who can't get funding to support my work, the whole thing feels pretty insulting.

One really weird thing right now: Lib ministers keep using the word "talent", but only with respect to foreign workers. E.g. "we want to have a strategy to bring talent to Canada", as if there was no domestic talent to be developed.

(I get it, they're all parroting the mandate letter, but still)

To be fair, I am traveling business class. A certain amount of coddling is expected for the ticket price. Plus, I imagine Brits might cry if they saw our train schedules (very infrequent).

On the train down, my seat mate asked for a whisky. The train attendant wasn't getting the pour he wanted so upended the bottle a few times and then finally removed the measure limiting thingy. It was beautiful to watch, especially because my neighbor wasn't the driving force of this AT ALL.

Via Rail attendants are top-notch at their jobs. Mine just came by and asked if I was ready for another gin-and-tonic <10 minutes after she delivered the first one. No notes.
