Camp scenes were high on my want list for Rebirth, sad we didn't get them. I love games with camp scenes where you get a chance to unlock character scenes, bond, and so forth. Sigh! What could've been.

I guess that wouldn't have worked with the grief metaphor, but honestly, the people of Lumiere deserved to live on their own - not at the whims of the gods' erratic feelings.

That's a good way to think about it. It was a false dichotomy.

I do think the moment they revealed Faded Boy was real Verso and didn't want to paint anymore, there wasn't a good answer 😮‍💨 But since the parameters were made up in the ending, why not have Maelle put a piece of her soul there instead?

I like hard endings and both endings were brutal in a way that emotionally resonated. It bothers me though that the ending was ultimately about Maelle's grief - and whether or not she and her family should move on and let real-Verso go - and not about the right for the people of the Canvas to live.

Anyway, one final thing about women. Why does every trashy movie adaptation portray Light as a straight man? Light is not interested in women. The story hammers that home again and again. That should be your primary takeaway from Death Note. Light's gay or asexual, and is repulsed by women. The end.

But then I'd have to give the post-L arc credit for being interesting, and I don't want to do that; it's not. lol

Killing off major characters is badass until you have to write what comes next. And Near's deductions are random guesswork that turns out to be right approximately 100% of the time.

It's annoying that none of the Japanese police officers are women, and more annoying that none of the "geniuses" (Light, L, Mello, Near) are women.

It actually would've been cool if Near, who ultimately beats Light, was female - and said something about the story's misogyny.-

Are even minor side characters exceptions? Rem, the female Shinigami, dies because she falls in love (with Misa of all people, bleh?) No love involved but Light's sister Sayu goes catatonic after getting kidnapped - more women getting completely wrecked.

Maybe Wedy, the thief? Ofc she dies but hey?

Tough CIA agent Halle Lidner is taking a shower for the audience when Mello kidnaps her at gunpoint, naked.

Don't worry, she's portrayed as uhh in love with Mello or something later on, trusting him when he later kidnaps Kiyomi and then is all "Oh, Mello.. 🥺" when he dies.

Kyomi is portrayed as smart, but she melts for Light. I get it, Light uses women romantically to manipulate them.. but the show makes her seem vapid when she invites Misa to dinner just to catfight about Light.

Then the story metaphorically and literally strips her naked before murdering her.

Naomi Misora is perhaps the coolest female character (low bar), for all the like 2 episodes she's in. Tough agent who nearly outsmarts Light, right?

Except in her very introduction with her male fiance, we find she's agreed to not be an agent anymore and focus on being a proper wife. 🙄

Misa's the worst. She's even more annoying than I remember. At least her being all "use me, Light, I don't care if you don't love me, also if you date anyone else I'll murder them" is upfront.

I think it'd bother me less if she were ever held accountable for her actions as Kira, but she never is.

Rewatching Death Note with my husband (who's never seen it!) for like the first time since I was obsessed with it in my teens.

Man, I remember not wanting to believe it then, but it's actually shocking how badly all the women are portrayed. Every one of them is subservient to a man they love.

I know it's too much thought to put into a children's movie, but I think "dismantling what makes us ashamed and choosing to be better for it" is a cool idea and it just didn't land.

Also, for a friendship story, her bandmates were minor NPCs relegated to comic relief, which was truly a shame (lol).

Then, how is being a demon symbolic of intense shame at choosing evil yet also a genetically inheritable condition? Should I assume this shame metaphor extends to Rumi's feelings towards her demon father (something that would've been neat to explore)? Except it seems her dad was a good demon (???).

I loved the music & vibes of KPop Demon Hunters.

Spoilers: I do think it got bungled in its own themes and message, though. Demons can resist the voices of shame (except Rumi must embrace her shame, not resist) and choose good - except the girls kill all the demons and only Jinu was redeemable.
