I pity the ordinary people. They always get the shity or, in this case, the oily sooty end of the stick.

At the risk of boring everyone,a little context.

$100 oil in isolation isn’t that bad. It averaged around that level from 2011-2014 without severe economic ramifications*.

It’s the pace of the rise that has people spooked. And not knowing where it might stop.

One thing this latest phase of Middle East oil war and the $100+ per barrel price news proves is: we are still so hooked on oil & gas that we don't stand much chance of avoiding a 3C hotter world and all the misery, violence and death it will bring.

Have a great week!

Trump could stop the war today, and we still will be dealing with its effects in November.

Heroin futures just went through the roof. All the junkies are going to have to rob someone to pay for their next fix.

Wouldn't be in this mess if we had pushed for clean renewables harder, sooner.

Killing the old man just so his reportedly much more radical/hardline son could take the reins. The Kim Jong-II to Kim Jong Un pipeline, facilitated by bombing runs.

From the Wall Street Crash to the 2008 global financial crisis, when economies are wrecked it is a window of opportunity for the big fish to gobble up all the little fish. It's how Capitalism works.

Trump, his family and pals will all make a killing.

The Β£ billions it will take to develop the UK sector North Sea would instead pay for numerous renewables developments.

We are likely heading past 2C globally by 2040. The world will tip into a more violent and aggressive state.

Do we want to help bring that about? Or not?

08.03.2026 22:55 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Two wrongs don't make a right. To focus on substituting US, Qatari or whatever gas with North Sea gas is entirely the wrong framing. It is retrograde and anti-climate security. The focus must be on rapid rollout and scaling up of renewables and battery storage. Or do we want a 3Β°C Britain?

Since people are rediscovering "clobbering" of cruise missiles, let me explain: Tomahawks use "terrain contour matching" (TERCOM) to find their way to targets. For reasons, about 1-2% of Tomahawks "clobber" -- get lost and fly into the ground -- en route to target.

Whether $50 a barrel, $100 a barrel or $150 a barrel, oil or rather its main combustion product, carbon dioxide, is going to accumulate in the atmosphere, causing climate change impacts, which help drive and amplify violence and wars.

Oil means death.
