I still think he died months ago and what we're seeing is some sort of animated corpse robotics project where the text-to-speech function really doesn't work very well even when it doesn't completely glitch out.

A fish swimming in front of a reef. It has large scales with an orange belly, and the green scales on its back have dark blue centres. The upper face is green with pink lines; the bottom of its head is light blue, with dark blue diagonal lines on the lower gill cover. There is a bright green patch on the tail although it's hard to see the shape as the tail is folded.

Wrasses can be surprisingly hard to identify. You'd think the distinctive colours would make it straightforward... but there are a LOT of them, and some are fairly similar, and their colours can vary.
This is (I think) a Linedcheek Wrasse (Oxycheilinus digramma). Pic from Anilao.

True, but... there was a time I'd visit the US regularly. I stopped during the first Trump administration because it wasn't a place I wanted to go any more.
Did I go back in the Biden years? No. Not a boycott... I've just gotten used to doing other things.
And that's how it'll be when Trump's gone.

I posted that song yesterday, too. Utterly depressing how relevant it remains.

Yup. The buoyancy, the not exhaling through your nose at all...
I could live with that, but the checks and having to really watch your console all the time would get me eventually. I'd get distracted and miss something and... that wouldn't be good.

Yeah, I did that once. When you can pour half a cup of rust-coloured seawater out of your strobe after the dive... it's probably done. โ ๏ธ โ ๏ธ โ ๏ธ

Although being able to go deep to see new and even more fascinating critters would be very cool. But I'm in no danger of running out of them at normal OC depths!

TBH, eliminating the bubbles so I can get closer to skittish things is the only thing that's ever tempted me about rebreathers. Way too much hassle and expense otherwise, and I'm not particularly into stuff like caves and going deep that you'd really need one for.

Oh no. A leaky first stage you can fix, but a flooded strobe is... $$$

Yeah, they've been in different places every time I've visited Bonaire. Last time I was there we saw a bunch of them in the sand at the top of the reef at the dive site by the salt works intake channel (I forget its name now). But it was nice to be able to spend time with them in shallow water.

Well... patience, and taking a photo every couple of inches that you move forward, and holding your breath while you do all that because bubbles are apparently really scary :)
And also a good macro lens is very helpful. I was probably six feed or so away from the closest ones when I took that

But was this somewhere around the Hooker? There's usually garden eels there on the sand between the reefs, and it's a busy spot

Now that I think of it... salps aren't just food and shelter - they're transport, too. The diel migration might be only a few hundred meters each way, but it's a daily trip and that's a good hike when you're only the size of a pea :)

Black and white photo of Marjane Satrapi with the quote:
"The world is not divided between East and West. You are American. I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.
And our governments are very much the same."
Once again.

Weren't a bunch of the drones that the Russians were using to attack Ukraine being sourced from Iran? If that supply line dies because Iran needs those drones for its own war, I can see why Zelensky would be happy with it.

A chain of salps, which are mostly translucent except for the organ at the bottom (I don't know what that is). There are two orange octopuses with white tentacles on the left and lower middle of the picture. There's a blurred thing which is probably a crustacean of some kind in the middle, and a small fish to the right of that. All of the passengers are either on or inside the salps - it's hard to tell which since they're almost completely transparent.

Salps serve as shelter for many other critters. This is part of a much longer chain of salps; there's two octopuses, a juvenile fish and what I think is an amphipod in this photo from a blackwater dive in Balayan Bay, Anilao
