Many musical/sonic choices feel a little arbitrary! There's a little bit of AI-core going on here, in my opinion!

I had a whole convo with @dandipiero.bsky.social about this. There's a substack to be written about the affect and politics of "stuck in high school" - of someone who has literally and ideologically not "gone to college" i.e. been through a perspective-broadening institutional/social crucible.

There are a lot of first draft lyrics in here! I know there are some critics who are arguing that her clunkier offerings are part of what gives her writing a distinctive voice, but I think that defense........has limits!

I think the loudest one is "Wi$h Li$t" (the "have a couple kids got the whole block looking like you" lyric in particular). But also the invocation of Megan Thee Stallion in "Eldest Daughter," (Meg didn't need to be in it!) and of course Cancelled!.

Definitely could be one interpretation, but the norm (that TS has established) is to interpret TS output as utterances by her, revelatory of her own feelings/autobiography

Artists aren't entirely responsible for the uses to which their work is put! But also how many staffers got a slack message this morning to start putting together a fancam of their right wing influencer boss set to the "cancelled" chorus?

Overall my preliminary take is that this is indeed boppier, which is nice, but it's hard for me to get over the significant list of lyrical choices that, at the most generous, indicate that she doesn't have someone in an editorial role going "hmmmmm that could be a white supremacist dogwhistle"

also the fact that she doesn't use the phrase "touch wood" is fully inhabiting me like a brain worm.
