UVW members have won this battle before.
In 2017, they forced Harrods to hand over 100% of the service charge, after the company had been keeping 75%.
That victory helped shape the national debate that led to the new law.
The outcome could affect hospitality workers across the UK.
Because if Β£1 walks like a tip and talks like a tipβ¦
They argue this breaches the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, which requires tips and service charges to be allocated fairly.
This is the first legal test of what really counts as a tip under the new law.
At issue: a compulsory Β£1 βcover chargeβ per person added to restaurant bills.
UVW members at Harrods say it functions like a tip, but it isnβt distributed to staff.

We organise. We strike. We win.
We bring our cultures, our traditions, our joy, and our spirit of resistance everywhere we go β and this country thrives because of us.
Today we celebrate migrant power.
