I'd assumed there was maybe a general agreement among the players that they'd just applaud the crowd from the centre circle, but Lucas forgot and started going round the pitch.

He should've avoided the "not true fans" trap, but he was definitely correct to say fans shouldn't boo individual players during a game. Otherwise, he would've looked weak to his players.

I actually don't get why people do it tbh. As you say, doesn't work, but also is much more vicious than, say, booing at final whistle. Don't want to over dramatise, but it's fans losing sight of players being human.
