Whee! 3.8 earthquake this morning, just off shore.

FDA Bans Red Dye 3 in Foods, Linking It to Cancer in Rats (Gift Article) Consumer and food safety groups have long urged the agency to revoke the use of this dye and others. The F.D.A. says there still is no evidence it is a human carcinogenic.

Why did this take so long?! Companies will still be given two more years to phase out its use in their consumable products.

This year, my resolution is to make a deliberate return to reading for intellectual curiosity and for fun. Having narrowed my mental focus too much in the middle of my life, I'm aiming to get back to broad curiosity and learning.

Last year's New Year's resolution was to improve my health. For the first time in my life, I succeeded in keeping it for the entire year and transforming it into a lifestyle change.

Spent a half hour tonight, lying back looking up at the night sky. I was reminded again of a line from a Sarah Williams poem, "I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night." Like many, I have been appalled by the recent turn of events.

But hold the line, and be brave in the dark.
